The Sparks Marina Lake and Its History

Before the construction of the Marina, the crater in the ground that currently serves as the lake’s location was a commercial district known as the Helms Gravel Pit. The excavation site became around 100 feet deep over several years due to the removal of a sufficient quantity of rock for road construction projects.

When the major flood caused by the Truckee River in 1997 occurred, preparations were being made to transform the area into a park with a small lake. The Helms hole was flooded with approximately one billion gallons of water overnight, resulting in Sparks Marina Lake’s formation.

A steady addition of around 2 million gallons per day runs to the lake via an underground spring. However, to keep the lake level constant, any excess water drains into the Truckee River.
